Looking for a headlamp and overwhelmed by all the options? The Irix by Icon is a solution for those people who are looking for a headlamp that can be dialed in for a certain light output. This headlamp come loaded with features, one being the oversized dial on top of the light to easily control the output levels of the light from 5-35 lumens. Being able to adjust the light has to be one of the best features about this light. I am always needed more or less light in certain situations from rummaging through a pack, to making it into camp way after dark.
The Irix is also made of high-strength polymer which makes is both durable and lightweight. After wearing the headlamp for a while you hardly feel it on you. The headband can be adjusted quickly and easily to fit different head sizes. Also being lightweight it feels very secure on the head while hiking.
Another great feature of the Irix is the ability to remove the body of the headlamp from the headband quickly. This enables you to use the Irix as a flashlight when a headlamp isn’t doing the trick. I know many times you will see me grabbing a headlamp and using it like a flashlight in my hand. This way you can leave the headband on and just remove the body of the Irix and then quickly snap it back onto the headband when done.
This light runs off of one AA battery and can last up to 72 hours. I have been surprised at how long the batteries last. This is done by the power-regulated LEDs that will never need replacing. The Irix is not waterproof, but it is highly weatherproof. Also you can adjust the direction of the light by simply tilting the body. This is nice so you don’t have to blind your friends while in camp.
The one problem that I had with the light was on top of the dial there was a metal ring for aesthetics that fell off. So it didn’t perform any less, but it did worry me at first that it might be a cheap headlamp. I was pleasantly surprised that the lamp performed much better than I had expected after that first impression.
