The Rapid 35 is really a pack designed for winter, but can do so much more. At 35 liters this is a great size for quick overnighters during the summer or for the times that you might need a little more gear during winter snowshoeing. The people at High Peak USA have put some serious thought into this pack.
The Rapid 35 is a top loading pack, which means you have one way to load and unload the pack; from the top. This is not always a bad thing but if you load it without thinking, getting that extra layer at the bottom can be tricky. The pack has a large external pocket designed for a snow shovel, but if using this pack in the summer you can shove a rain jacket or other items that you will need quick access to. It does come with a few other pockets to be able to organize the essentials. Also the two pockets on the hip belt are a great place to store sunscreen and some snack for the trail.
One nice thing about this pack that stood out to me from similar size packs is the adjustable harness system. These means you are able to adjust the fit to a specific torso. For me, this is a great feature as I have a shorter torso and some one size fit all packs fit a little large. Being able to dial in the fit is great for comfort. The hip belt on this pack is a little more substantial than other other similarly sized packs but I wouldn’t recommend loading this pack with more than 35 lbs. You can also remove the hip belt if you need to on the pack.
This pack has a couple heavy duty straps for mounting skis on the side as well as compression straps to secure and lock down the skis. Also two ice ax holders can double for trekking pole holders when using this pack in the summer. A sternum strap with an emergency whistle and being hydration bladder ready, this is a great choice for someone looking for a versatile pack.
